Fast food

DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS

Nowadays fast food restaurants are trendy in our society as they provide quick, cheap and delicious food, but : it`s good to consume this salty food, with plenty of fat and little protein? In fact it is not, as this can become obesity, a very complex illness that also involves blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, and in some cases also diabetes.
In our society, people are accustomed to go to junk food restaurants as they are cheap and the food is ready almost instantly. But the kind of food they provide is anything but healthy. It has been demostrated that large fries and a large Coca-Cola drink amounts to 1430 calories. A diet of approximately 2000 calories is considered a healthy amount of calories for an entire day, which means that this kind of food provides almost what we need daily.
Nowadays in Argentina the amount of fast food restaurants has increased a lot which means that also peolple`s eating habits are worse than ever. The most common dishes that Argentinians consume are pizzas, hot dogs, milanesa, sandwiches, and also the classic burguer. In our province, Mc Donalds and Burger King are the most trendy and popular fast food restaurants. In fact, there are only two Mc Donalds and one Burger King in our city, which is maybe why they are so trendy.
But something very different happens in countries like the United States. Fast food restaurants are almost everywhere and the variety is surprisingly big. Some of the most popular are Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Mc Donalds and Burger King, but as they are so common, people sometimes prefer , trying new restaurants, such as vegatarians or exotic ones rather than the typical fast food restaurants.
As this industry of junk food gets bigger and travels around the world , also do the studies and research about how unhealthy this eating habit is, and how it´s increasing too. According to recent research and statistics 300 million people in the world are obese and 750 million people are overweight. In our country 10,44% percent of women and 12,18% percent of man are obese. This results must be alarming considering that obesity also involves other illnesses such as cardiovascular problems, high colesterol and diabetes, among others that can become mortal especially diabetes as it is becoming even more dangerous.
Unfortunately what this industry has that is very important for them is the publicity. The amount of money they spend to promote their products is very high, which is why they are so well known. But all the damage they cause to public health is not so public, that`s why people sometimes don`t know how harmful this food can be.
To sum up, I think people should have more information about all the health problems fast food produces and how harmful they can be. The solution to the obesity problem is not to avoid junk food restaurants, but to increase the information about how unhealthy it is. Who doesn`t want to eat a burguer once in a while?. Anybody. It's only a question of getting more nutritional information and better eating habits.

Varios colegios desarrollan experiencias

No ocupa

IB Work

The impact of technology on our daily life

by Antonieta Majorel '07

Technology has become part of our daily life and its presence is increasing with every new and fantastic service or device launched in the market. We have become so used to it that it has changed some traditions. The question is: does technology have a positive or negative impact on our daily life?

Nowadays, technology is experiencing great development in entertainment, such as multiplayer games, videogames, MP3s and even MP4s. These gadgets offer a variety of ways of having fun, on your own or with someone else. The negative point is that they are frequently used alone, which increases the tendency of isolation. People live immersed in their own universe, without paying attention to what surrounds them. As a consequence, face-to-face relationships are affected. However, with the Internet, e-mail and some online games, another form of global communication has emerged. We can be in touch with people from Italy, China and Guatemala simultaneously, or read the recent news published in South Africa, Prague or Vancouver. This favors cultural exchange, which makes people more open-minded and accepting of differences. Besides, MP3s and MP4s aren’t only used for entertainment but also for the storage of information, like pen-drives. This is a very practical use. The downside is that statistics show a tendency of getting deaf earlier if you listen to extremely loud music frequently.

Another aspect of technology is that it has changed the traditional concept of work. With e-mail, some jobs allow working at home, without going to the office. Research has confirmed that this new method is more productive than the traditional one. However, they also found that working at home leads to devoting more hours to work. This idea is related to the loss of privacy due to the fact that modern workers are always on call. With mobile phones and the Internet we are always available for any kind of message, either from family or work. The dilemma with technology is that we don’t know how to organize our time, i.e. when to work and when to relax. In fact, technology isn’t the problem; the difficulty is that we don’t set our schedule properly. Still, our life quality has decreased because we have become stressed-out workaholics. What's more, our work quality has also diminished because as technology allows us to do many activities at the same time, we don’t concentrate much on each and that affects our performance.

In conclusion, despite having negative consequences on account of its wrong use – deafness owing to loud music, isolation, extra hours working at home, being always on call - technology itself is a key tool that helps us to simplify and improve our life. A great variety of new devices and services promote cultural exchange, boost entertainment and give benefits to workers. So, the impact is largely more positive than negative.

Stem Cell Research

The use of stem cells is the new advance in science and they are produced by embryos, which are destroyed in order to take these cells. They can replace every type of cell in our body and this is how scientists assure that most diseases can be cured. Biologically, this discovery is wonderful; even paralyzed people will be able to walk again by replacing the damaged cells in the spinal chord. But there is controversy on the issue: is it morally or ethically right to kill embryos?

Undoubtedly it is a great discovery and many lives can be saved, but at the same time there is a moral issue involved. Apart from paralysis in the spinal chord, there are other diseases that can be cured, such as diabetes, Alzheimer and heart problems. That is why, for a sick person the use of stem cells is a great advance in science; they know what it feels to be sick, and it is for sure that they want to be treated. But beyond those great and remarkable results, embryos are potential individuals. And if we kill what is likely to become a person in order to save another life, we are depriving someone’s right to live.

As far as I’m concerned, stem cells are, for sure, an incredible success in science, which shows that we are really improving health treatment. But the fact that embryos have to be destroyed is worth considering. We can’t just discard them because we are trying to save another person, or doing research. This issue is closely related to the controversy over abortion or euthanasia, so I think that it will be as difficult to solve as those issues are. When human life plays a role in the matter, we have to be careful with the choices we make. So, if you are alive, you have the right to live, why should you kill a life that is just beginning?

In my opinion, the research with stem cells that need to sacrifice the embryo shouldn’t be done. The only way I approve the research is with the stem cells that can be taken from the umbilical chord when the baby is born. They are not as efficient as the ones in the embryo, but taking them doesn’t steal the possibility of a person to develop.

The US and the global war against terrorism **

The US and the global war against terrorism

Almost six years ago, one of the most shocking and dramatic events took place in the United States of America. We can still recall the moment in which we turned on the TV and watched the World Trade Center falling down in ashes and one of the Pentagon wings completely gone. That was the moment in which not only international diplomacy but also human history took a brand new direction.

It was the first time that a terrorist attack had hit the US and affected the citizens directly. As many political analysts once claimed, important foreign policy changes were carried out after 9/11 and especially in regard to external relationships. A few weeks later, President Bus inmediately decided to declare a global war against terrorism. Although he wasn’t backed up by the United Nations Security Committee, he gathered the support of the Republican Party and the members of NATO to start war in the Middle East. At this point, after five years of fighting, the consequences it has brought can’t be ignored anymore and in this sense the American people are starting to work out new ways to make this conflict stop once and for all.

At the beginning, when war was officially declared on October 7, 2001, the US government announced that Afghanistan would be the first target because it was the place where Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda was hidden. Afterwards, they attacked Iraq and the United States government gave many different types of explanations to justify the true reason for going to war: economic interests, basically based on oil. Different political analysts after have concluded that the war hide important interests supported mainly by the most important petrol industries.

One justification was that Iraq was developing chemical plants to produce weapons of mass destruction. In this sense the UN formed a special committee known as the 9/11 committee to research and explore the area. And as a consequence of the lack of weapons of mass destruction all along the country the UN refused to support the United States in its war against Iraq.

Another aspect I would like to point out about the US explanations to justify war is that at some point, those who decided on aggression end up paying a price. Specialists say that nowadays terrorism is the main threat for the US and in order to face it the country decided to strengthen their national and international security as well as to become the leader of a war that hides many aspects that haven’t been totally discovered yet. It is not an easy but a rather complex reality that has to be solved urgently.

On one hand, the truth after all is that US citizens, who used to support the war that the government started after Wall Street, are suffering more than never the fact of living in a constant war. A great part of the nation is starting to march in order to re-establish peace and to convince the government to end up war. And also the US families are willing to have their sons back once for all.

On the other hand, we should analyze whether a nation can declare war on another one in spite of not having the support of the United Nations. Is there any valid explanation to sacrifice such a huge number of lives and cause serious harm in many aspects just in order to obtain nothing else but economic benefits?
